Thomas PAINE (1737-1809), son of a Quaker staymaker of Thetford; being dismissed as an excisemen in 1774, for agitating for an increase in excisement´s pay, at the suggestion of his friend Benjamin Franklin, he sailed for America, where he published in 1776 his pamphlet “Common Sense” and “The Crisis” (1783) encouraging American independence and resistance to England; he also wrote against slavery and in favour of the emancipation of women. In 1787 he returned to England and published in 1791 the first part of “The Rights of Man” in replay to Burke´s “Reflections on the Revolution in France”. The second part appeared in 1792, when, alerted by Blake of an impending arrest, Paine left for France, where he was warmly received and elected a member of the Convention. However, he opposed the execution of Louis XVI and was imprisoned for nearly a year, and narrowly escaped the guillotine. “The Age of Reason” (1793), an attack on Christianity and the Bible from a Deist point of view, increased the violent hatred with which he was regarded in England, where his effigy and books were burned. He returned to America in 1802, where his views on religion and his opposition to Washington had made him unpopular.

I knew of his book on common sense but had only read quotes. I now realize that Paine was an amazingly courageous and important figure in the birth of America. His writings are as relevant today as they were over 200 years ago. The book is nicely done and a great read!

Every American, especially, should read the works of Thomas Paine and our other founders.
more writings of thomas paine, a must read
Just finished this. And I highly recommend it for those who love history. Great writing on the part of all.
General Washington, while flawed, was a better General than those Paine praised. Understandably, he felt abandoned when he was imprisoned. His belief that the British voluntarily abandoned Boston rather than were forced out is wrong. Also the assessment that Washington did nothing at crucial times assumes that Washington had the resources to do anything. Paine praised General Gates for the victory at Saratoga, which was won in spite of him, and doesn't mention Gate's role in the defeat at Camden where Gates abandoned the army and fled. Paine correctly pointed out that British naval power made Long Island untenable and the British would always have the ability to out maneuver the Americans as long as they were near water. But Washington learned from his mistakes and used what he learned at Yorktown. Paine had great ideas, and some workable solutions for political and foreign policies, but his criticisms of military operations seemed to come mainly from hindsight.
great book
Paine died in France in obscurity and disgrace -- abandoned by the mainstream American revolutionaries that used his stirring propaganda to rouse Americans to fight against the Crown. His writings were adjudged too radical at the time (and are probably too radical today for many), and he was personally a difficult person, and certainly not from the upper classes from which the American revolution drew most of its most famous leaders. Still, his words are stirring today and are a fine example of how to write persuasively.

Remember that at the time (the late 1700s) nearly everyone accepted aristocratic and monarchical rule as natural. Democracy as a concept was sneered at as "mob rule", although the distant example of ancient Greek democracy was widely known and discussed. The French revolution, the murder of the French king and the takeover of France and Europe by Napoleon electrified Europeans as a warning of what to expect should democracy gain a toehold on the continent. America served as the sole example of democracy through the 1800s, although the European monarchists and aristocrats gradually lost power, they weren't really ousted in Europe until World War I and the Russian revolution.

Arguably, the ideas behind Paine's writings and the American revolution are accepted only a few places on this planet today. The monarchists and aristocrats have changed their dress and their outward manner, but they are still enslaving most of the world's peoples and eating out the fat of the land. So Thomas Paine is still worth reading and thinking about, even for those of you who spend most of your time playing Angry Birds or watching football or pop tarts.
There is really only one way to describe Paine, a genius, and definitely a man far beyond even those today. You truly do yourself a disfavor by not reading and absorbing his works.
